MUGA (Multi-gated acquisition scan) is a form of radionuclide imaging that provides the physician with a comprehensive evaluation of the function of the lower chambers of the heart. A small amount of radioactive isotope called a tracer is injected into the bloodstream through an IV line. This substance emits gamma rays that are picked up by a special gamma camera. This camera takes pictures of the heart which allows the physician to gain an accurate picture of the lower ventricles.
